Job Description

ALTs work directly in Japanese public elementary and junior high schools, aiding Japanese teachers in conducting English lessons. You will become a valued part of the school community, interacting with children and adults alike throughout the day. ALTs go beyond simply teaching English in the classroom, and help create an immersive environment that builds connections and changes lives. Be a part of the educational process, influencing your students’ experience and interest in learning!

As an ALT, you have the opportunity to:

  • Assist Japanese teachers in delivering English lessons in the classroom, as well as planning lessons and helping outside of class
  • Build relationships with your students and fellow co-teachers during lunch, recess, cleaning time, and free periods
  • Get to see a different side of Japanese culture and become part of a community, something you wouldn’t experience as a tourist
  • Share your own culture with your schools and help strengthen the ties between Japan and the rest of the world
  • Participate in school club activities and other events (sports days, culture festivals, and more)
  • Make English “real” for your students, and give them a level of insight and engagement that they could never obtain just from the textbook

Borderlink ALTs enjoy a range of benefits and support, including:

  • A wide range of locations nationwide, including some of Japan’s biggest cities
  • Personalized, friendly assistance with setting up your bank account, housing, etc
  • Year-round paid training sessions (including orientation/initial training)
  • Access to teaching materials and our vast library of educational resources
  • Fixed schedule with no mandatory overtime (generally between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm)
  • Weekends/National Holidays/School Vacation Periods free
  • Paid holidays (as stipulated by the contract)
  • Priority for future positions and/or possibility of career advancement in the company
  • A yearly calendar of working days to help you manage your schedule

Requirements:

  • 12 years of education where English was the main language of instruction (all subjects)
  • University graduate with Bachelor’s degree or higher (any field)
  • Able to commit to a full 1-year contract with minimal consecutive absences
  • Strong desire to work with young learners (15 years or lower)
