You’ll be published, under your own name, on one of Malaysia’s most-read homegrown media sites. That starts in your first few weeks, not at the end.

The Smart Local Malaysia covers where to eat, where to go and what’s happening around the country. You’ll pitch stories, write them, and see them go live to a real audience with real comments underneath. Some of them will do well and some won’t, and you’ll learn to tell the difference.

  You should have the ability to commit to a minimum of 24-week internship.

What you will do:

• Pitching stories in editorial meetings. Some will get killed. That’s the job and it’s how you learn what works.
• Writing to publish. Listicles, features, news posts, opinion pieces. You’ll get edited properly, line by line, which is the fastest way anyone learns to write.
• Getting out of the office. Openings, tastings, events, and the reporting that only happens in person.
• Making social graphics for TSL Malaysia’s platforms, and shooting your own photos for pieces when needed.
• Take pictures when necessary for articles

The successful candidate should have:

• Your English is strong and you can make a point without padding it out.
• You know what’s going on in Malaysia. New openings, what people are arguing about online, where everyone’s suddenly going on weekends.
• You want to write for readers rather than for a grade.
• You can commit to [24 weeks] and be in the Mid Valley office.
• Send a couple of writing samples with your application. Coursework, a blog, a student publication, anything you’ve written that you’re happy to be judged on. It doesn’t have to be published.
